Impacting the city develops further the principles set out in Sowing Seeds for Revival. Martin Scott now puts forward four important strategies for reaching a city with the gospel. These strategies will enable the church to make an impact on its locality.

Firstly Martin looks at the need for those with leadership responsibility to come together in unity. The second emphasis is for Christians to be involved in all spheres of city life. Thirdly is the need for developing effective prophetic prayer in the church and lastly is for the need for the prophetic watchmen to be released into ministry.

The second part of the book looks at city types. Martin Scott proposes that cities fall into "city types" these are identifiable from the characteristics of the city or town. These are linked to the seven cities in the book of Revelation. The recognition of a city type is a valuable insight when developing prayer strategies for specific places. The book has been translated into Portuguese and is being widely read and used in Brazil, where there has been much church growth.
